Friday morning we went to the bus stop to ride a really nice bus to Guatemala. It was 50 bucks each, round trip with a meal included. It was a very nice bus ride and took about 3 hours to get from Santa Ana, El Salv, to Guatemala. The bus took us right downtown where we met our good friend Pratt (Jesus look alike) who also served with me on the mission, and another mission friend who is from Guatemala. We grabbed some lunch and then headed to Antigua (which means ancient), Guatemala. Heath says that this was probably her favorite part of the trip. She loved the old buildings and the style of the city. We stayed at a nice hotel, but the bad part was it was above a dance club so we could hear the music until the party was over, (well, Heath could hear it, us Rickers can sleep through anything!!) We did a lot of walking and took a lot of pictures.
A little bit of history of Antigua, which was the capital city of Guate, for those who care, if not, just skip this part.
Throughout its history the city now known as Antigua Guatemala, or La Antigua, was repeatedly damaged by earthquakes, and always the Antigueños (the people who lived there) rebuilt, bigger and better. But on July 29, 1773, the day of Santa Marta, earthquakes wrought such destruction that officials petitioned the King of Spain to allow them to move the capital to safer ground, which led to the founding in 1776 of present-day Guatemala City. Antigua was left to rusticate, largely but never completely abandoned. Today its monumental bougainvillea-draped ruins, and its preserved and carefully restored Spanish colonial public buildings and private mansions give form to a city of charm and romance unequaled in the Americas. In 1979 UNESCO recognized Antigua Guatemala as a Cultural Heritage of Mankind site.

All I can say is WOW! Those buildings are beautiful! My favorite was the coke in a bag, that's hilarious. What an amazing trip!
Don't you LOVE Antigua?! It was totally my favorite city in Guatemala. Did you hike the Pacaya Volcano? All your pictures bring back so many memories :) Heath, I knew you would love it. Hope all is well! ~Erin
